“Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.” ~Gustave Flaubert
Today we spent the morning cruising the final stretch of the Main River on our way to Bamberg. It is a city built on seven hills (trust me they did not exaggerate about the hills)!
In the morning on the ship there was a “German Fruhshoppen” where those that wanted were treated to German beer, sausages and meats.
We arrived in town and our walking tour took us over what felt like the seven hills and up and over cobblestone paths. We beat the “active” walking group, though I do not believe it was the intention. The town was as picturesque as any we have visited. And of course the tour ended with a beer.
One of the things about this river trip I wont miss are the the “Locks” along the way. I give the captains a lot of credit for steering us safely in and out of the narrow lock. A lock is a place where boats that are traveling up or down a river or canal can be raised higher or lower. They are built in places where the level of the water in the river or canal suddenly changes. On this river cruise there were fifty one locks. Here are some views from our cabin when in one of the locks.
We had a lovely reception for all of the staff before dinner and we were honored to be one of the couples at the captain’s table for dinner. It was the last evening for some of our group to be together as some of us leave for Munich in the morning while some go on to Budapest. As I am in the following pictures I can not take full responsibility for the quality.
“I’ve met the most interesting people while flying or on a boat. These methods of travel seem to attract the kind of people I want to be with.”
